Admiring the fox at Fushimi Inari…

Bamboo forest on the way up…

Hiking isnt a thing that I do too often. And I guess I cant really call what we did today hiking really since we decided not to go to the top of mt. Inari. Since we’ve got a ton of walking in Japan planned and need to cover some miles both in and between temples.

Little mini shrine

Anywho fushimi inari was the morning temple. Dedicated to the fox God inari. This is the temple youve probably seen with the bunches of orange red gates up the mountain. And there are a ton of gates. And seemingly even more stairs than gates.

We walked around up and down and all over for a good 3 hours. I left J at a landing and then proceeded to climb about 20 minutes of stairs to what was called the crossroads. The sign said that there was another 45 minutea to the aummit and presumably about that much back down. Then another 30+ minutes back down to the main shrine.

Stairs and gates, gates and stairs…

We were on both a schedule and a step count so I didn’t keep going.  Crossroads indeed.  But the neat thing was that it wasnt just all staors and gates. There were lots of mini shrines along the way. Each had simething cool going on. Probably more cool if I could read Japanese.

Cats still rule the foxy roost…

But the weather was great and the temple was a blast, more fun than I thought, and the crowds did lessen the further in and higher up you got.

Shrine up on another path to mt. Inari…
