Today we walked off the boat in Split, Croatia. Another warm and sunny day we stilled our way into town past a very large number of yachts on one side of the street (with no railing on the water side of the street) and vendors sellimg just about everything on the other side.
Our first stop was really our only stop. We walked to the cathedral of st. Dominus which also was surround by the Diocletians Palace. Both were built around the 4th century and are apparently some of the best preserved roman buildings around.
The palace area is really just a bunch of buildings, ruins, and streets, and not a Palace in the traditional sense. But it was a very neat old area and the filming scene of portions of game of thrones. But large parts of croatia were the film sets for game of thrones so you cant really get away from it even if you didnt know.
J got quickly bored of split and the Diocletians Palace so of course we got a taxi to take us to Klis Fortress, which sits up on the hills above Split. The fortress was neat and was quite old but in generally good condition and offered great views. And of course was a film scene for game of thrones.
After this J had the cab take us to some cave up in the hills. You know J likes caves. It was quite rural and I thought we had a 1 in 4 chance of becoming hard rock mining slave labor, but everything worked out quite splendidly. The cave had a few stairs but was compact and impressive.
All in all a wide ranging day of taxi transport and we got back to the cruise terminal in time for J to do some grocery shopping.
I really enjoyed the old town Split but didn’t get to spend much time there. Maybe I’ll be back some time. J enjoyed the cave and its various formations. Of course our entire time in the next port is travelling to and going in a cave so I’m sure I’ll be undergrounded out by tomorrow.
